Built circa 1940, the Queens Midtown Tunnel connects the Long Island Expressway (I-495) to the East Side of midtown Manhattan. The tunnels, two 31 foot diameter tubes are over a mile long with 3,900 feet directly below New York’s East River. This project provided for leak repairs to reduce leakage through tunnel liners, replacement of the tunnel ceiling, new roadway lighting, rehabilitation of the vent buildings and ancillary work.
Savin Engineers performed detailed construction inspection for contract compliance, quality control and partial payments for demolition of the existing ceiling, removal of ceiling tiles, installation of precast concrete panels, lead abatement, concrete repairs and mechanical work. Savin personnel also monitored demobilization of the contractor’s activities at the end of each shift for traffic safety measures, performed CPM scheduling analysis as well as traffic counting. Ninety percent of the work was performed at night.
