Design
Savin has been providing design services since the inception of the company. Our staff of highly motivated and detail oriented personnel assess site conditions, perform and coordinate field testing, identify and evaluate solutions, and prepare comprehensive construction documents.
Alternatives Evaluation In order to properly evaluate a project, a comprehensive evaluation of existing site data and field conditions must be performed. Savin designers visit every project, walk the site to assess existing conditions and determine appropriate testing needs. These needs may include utility surveys, drainage system evaluations, geotechnical borings, hazardous materials investigations, soils testing, and others.
Once the needs are identified and the site conditions established, Savin starts the evaluation process. A review of technologies is performed and potential solutions are developed. We evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of each solution as well as develop life-cycle costs. Savin uses a triple bottom line approach to assess alternatives, which includes consideration of economic, environmental, and social circumstances that are uniquely relevant to each client. Whether it is a large comprehensive study or a small rehabilitation project, our evaluation process is focused on the unique characteristics of each client and solutions that will fit their particular situation.
In addition to identifying the technical solutions to meeting the client needs, Savin outlines the regulatory needs of the project. This may include environmental reviews (SEQRA and similar), Art Commission and Landmarks Commission submittals , Building and Construction Permits, Land Use Permitting, air permitting, utility coordination, and others. This provides our clients a full understanding of what their needs are.
Drawing Preparation Savin uses the latest programs for preparation of drawings to support the construction of a project. We utilize the National CAD Standards for producing drawings and refine the standards based on each client's specific standards. Whether it is the latest CAD 2D program for simple projects or advanced 3D software with BIM capability for complex projects, we provide the utmost care in developing visual representations of site conditions and designed solutions. Our experienced engineers not only make sure the design fits on paper, but also evaluate how the systems are constructed in order to ensure the contractors can construct a project appropriately.
Construction Documents Savin's construction documents are an integrated set of drawings and specifications. In addition to well coordinated drawings, we utilize the latest Construction Standards Institute (CSI) format for specifications and tailor each individual specification requirement for each project. Construction documents are coordinated with the client at several stages (typically at 30%, 60%, 90% and 100% stages) to ensure client expectations are incorporated in the project. Estimates are prepared at each stage and refined along with the refinements of the design.
Upon completion of the construction documents, Savin assists with the bidding process including scheduling of the pre-bid conference and tour, preparation of all required presentation materials and attendance of the tour, preparation of addenda in response to any questions from bidders, evaluation of bids to determine if they are reasonable and suitable for award, and preparation of conformed contract documents.
Design Services During Construction In addition to preparation of the construction documents, Savin designers stay involved with the project until it is complete. Savin reviews all shop drawings submitted by the contractor to ensure compliance with the contract documents, evaluates manufacturers and suppliers submitted by the contractor, evaluates materials of construction submitted by the contractor, attends meetings required for the project, evaluates contractor initiated substitutions, provides interpretation and clarification of contract documents, attends shop tests and field tests as necessary for mechanical and electrical equipment, and other services necessary to ensure successful completion of the project.
Upon completion of the project, Savin ensures that the owner has all the training and tools necessary to operate their facility. Savin prepares start-up plans and acceptance procedures, ensures Operation and Maintenance Manuals are comprehensive and coordinated, ensures training to the supervisory staff is provided, prepares fixed asset surveys for the modifications to the facility’s fixed assets as a result of the construction modifications, and if necessary prepares new color flow diagrams or modify existing color flow diagrams to indicate the current facility configuration.
