The City of New York is conducting a facilities plan for upgrading the 360 MGD Newtown Creek Water Pollution Control Plant. The City is also developing a System-Wide Eutrophication Model which assesses the effectiveness of the treatment options and the impact on receiving waters. In order to develop and verify the model, water quality data has to be collected. Savin was responsible for collecting water quality data from point sources throughout a 5000 square mile region.

Combined Sewer Overflows and Storm water Discharges: Savin was responsible for collecting samples from 29 combined sewer overflows and storm water discharges during three rainfall events. Savin was able to rapidly mobilize personnel and equipment to capture rainfall events by use of our mobile communications network.

Wastewater Treatment Plants: Savin collected 24-hour composite samples from the effluent of 26 wastewater treatment plants. The procedure entailed installing automatic, pre-programmed samplers on one day and retrieving samples the following day.

Tributary Streams: Grab samples from eleven tributaries were collected twice per month for ten months. Since many of the sampling locations were in remote areas, Savin field crews had to carefully coordinate the operations to ensure compliance with the sampling protocol.
