The New York City Department of Environmental Protection under Consent Decree with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), has agreed to conduct a number of programs to protect the Kensico Watershed as part of the Filtration Avoidance Agreement. As part of this program, steps were taken to evaluate the condition of the sewer system in the watershed and to rehabilitate the sewers that were potential sources of exfiltration which could contaminate the Reservoir.

Manhole Inspections: Using the existing manhole database and sewer maps, Savin located, identified and inspected all manholes within the watershed.

Television Inspection: Approximately 27,000 linear feet of sewer ranging from 8 inches to 24 inches in diameter was televised. A significant portion of these sewers was located in the easement within the protected watershed. To overcome these challenges, field crews used specialized portable video equipment to televise the sewers.

Database Management: A detailed report of all the findings of the sewer and manhole inspection was compiled. This report highlighted defects found during the field study and recommended various types of rehabilitation that were necessary.
