The Town of Groton, CT was required to complete a facility plan of its wastewater collection, transportation and treatment systems. As part of that plan, Savin Engineers completed the sewer system evaluation survey. The collection system is comprised of approximately 350,000 linear feet of collector sewers and interceptors and four pumping stations. The Mystic Aquarium, a nationally known tourist destination, is located within the project area.

Flow monitors were installed and maintained at 14 locations for a period of six weeks. Two tipping bucket rain gauges and six piezometer groundwater gauges were also maintained during the flow monitoring.

Based on the results of the flow monitoring, Savin conducted smoke testing on 200,000 linear feet of sewer. Manhole inspections were conducted at known trouble spots in the system. Smoke testing was particularly challenging because the Mystic Aquarium is located within the area that was tested.

Savin was responsible for conducting dyed water testing of sources suspected of contributing inflow. These sources were identified during the smoke testing. Savin used a fluorescent green dye to determine if roof leaders, roof drains, and area drains were connected to the sanitary sewer system.
