Boston Water & Sewer Commission has undertaken a program to identify and remediate illegal sanitary connections to the storm drain system in Metropolitan Boston. Savin undertook the field work in order to identify the illegal connections and to confirm that they were properly repaired. Manhole Inspections: Surface and entry inspections of approximately 2400 storm drain manholes for obvious illegal connections. Drain maps were modified based on field observations during the inspections. Dyed Water Testing: In areas upstream of known contamination, Savin tested approximately 2400 building laterals to determine their discharge locations. Field Tests: Savin conducted 600 field tests in manholes to confirm presence of sanitary contamination. Test kits were used to analyze ammonium, surfactants and pH. Sandbags: Sandbags were placed downstream of connected lateral connections to confirm that the connection had been removed.
