The Croton Landfill Stormwater Control System had to accommodate site, aesthetic, environmental and geometric constraints. The installed system had to be aesthetically pleasing, low maintenance and high capacity. To meet these constraints, a network of long, low profile earthen berms were constructed. The length, cross section, slope and channel lining of each berm was designed to stagger the time of concentration of a 24 hour 25 year return period storm over the 125 acre site. By staggering the peak flow in each berm, the overall system was designed such that the maximum flow would not exceed the capacity of the site’s two outfall inlets, around the toe of the landfill slope, for additional peak flow control.
The low profile bermed channels are almost indistinguishable when viewed against the scale of the landfill slopes. Once seeded, the grass further obscures their presence. Walkways and hiking trails are integrated with the berm configurations to heighten the appealing interaction between park users and varying topography.
