The board of this 1926 castle-like Gothic school wanted to expand the building, but only in the back, keeping its well-known, 600-foot long facade in tact. The board also wanted a material that would complement the Yonkers granite of the original structure, which is no longer produced.
A nationwide search for an alternative resulted in the discovery of a so-called "rockface" brick, only available in the MidWest and Canada. The school increased by a third in size. Improvements included the replacement of small gyms for girls and boys with one of regulation size, increasing the center core of the building and the addition of cast concrete columns on the exterior that mimic those on the facade.
